Periventricular leucomalacia in neonates. Complications and sequelae.

چکیده
Periventricular leucomalacia is the term used to describe cerebral infarctions occurring near the lateral ventricles in neonates. The lesion was first described by Virchow in 1867; and was reemphasized and named periventricular leucomalacia by Banker and Larroche (1962) who described 51 cases and reviewed the published cases. This unusual site for cerebral infarction occurs in the watershed area between the ventriculopetal and ventriculofugal circulations described by Van den Bergh and Vander Eecken (1968). In neonates the infarction results from failure of perfusion (ischaemia). Periventricular leucomalacia is not by itself lethal but may produce spastic quadriparesis and mental retardation in babies surviving neonatal cardiorespiratory problems (De Reuck, Chattha, and Richardson, 1972). Our purpose is to describe the haemorrhages, sometimes massive, into areas of periventricular leucomalacia, and the descending degeneration of long tracts with resulting spastic hemiplegia as a sequel to cavitation of the periventricular leucomalacia.

Periventricular leucomalacia and neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm infants.
During an 18 month period, 120 preterm infants of 34 weeks' gestation or less were prospectively examined for periventricular leucomalacia (PVL) by cerebral ultrasound. Neurological and developmental assessment was carried out at 18 months of age corrected for prematurity in 82 surviving neonates. The developmental outcome (Griffiths development quotient) was above 80 and similar in infants wit...

The brains of 30 infants who died after at least one real time ultrasound scan were examined after fixation. The ultrasound diagnosis of either periventricular haemorrhage or periventricular leucomalacia was compared with the macroscopic and histological appearances. Each hemisphere was considered separately for both periventricular haemorrhage and periventricular leucomalacia. The accuracy of ...

AIM To evaluate the correlation between visual function and neurodevelopmental outcome in children with periventricular leucomalacia at 1 and 3 years. METHOD Visual acuity, visual field, ocular motility, and optokinetic nystagmus were tested in 29 infants with periventricular leucomalacia by brain magnetic resonance imaging. All infants also had a structured neurological examination and a Gri...
متن کاملPeriventricular Hemorrhage in Term and Late Preterm Neonates: Risk Factors and Outcomes
Background: Periventricular hemorrhage (PVH) is common in early preterm neonates but much less common in term and late preterm neonates. The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors and outcomes of PVH in term and late preterm neonates in a tertiary care center in Upper Egypt. Methods: A total of 33 term and late preterm (≥ 34 weeks...
متن کاملPeriventricular leucomalacia and intraventricular haemorrhage in the preterm neonate.
Two hundred very low birthweight infants were prospectively scanned to ascertain the incidence of periventricular leucomalacia (PVL) and haemorrhage. Before collection of data, clear definitions of ultrasound abnormalities believed to represent PVL and intraventricular haemorrhage were described. These referred to small and moderate intraventricular haemorrhage, paenchymal haemorrhage, and PVL,...
